-ed and –ing adjectives

Many of my students often are confused when using adjectives that end ‘-ed’ (e.g. ‘surprised‘, ‘interested’) and adjectives that end ‘-ing’ (e.g. ‘surprising’, ‘interesting’)

-ed adjectives

Adjectives that end in ‘-ed’ describe how people feel about something.
ex.
1. I was very bored during the conference, everybody spoke in Cantonese and I can’t speak a word.
2. He was very annoyed when he found out that his boss had taken his car without permission.
3. It was a very hard day and he felt tired and depressed so he went to bed soon.

-ing adjectives
Adjectives that end in -ing are used to describe things and situations that cause the feeling – a boring party makes you feel bored.
ex.
1.Have you seen that film? It’s terrifying.
2. My boss can be so annoying.
3. My job is tiring and depressing.

Remember that people can be boring or interesting but only if they make other people feel bored or interested.
· He’s always talking about Aikido for hours. He’s so boring.    O
· I was very boring at the party so I went home.    X

Here are some more adjectives that can have both an ‘-ed’ and an ‘-ing’ form.

☆ I = bored(私=退屈に感じている)
☆ he = annoyed(彼=不愉快に感じている)
☆ he = tired, depressed(彼=疲れて、気も重く感じている)

例えば、a boring party(人を退屈な気分にさせるパーティー)のせいで人は feel bored(退屈した気分)になってしまいます。
【例】
☆ that film = terrifying(あの映画=めっちゃ怖い気分にさせる)
☆ my boss = annoying(うちの上司=うっとうしい気分にさせる)
☆ my job = tiring, depressing(私の仕事=かったるく、気が滅入る気分にさせる)

☆ He = boring(彼=人を退屈な気分にさせているので、この使い方はOK!)
☆ I ≠ boring(私 ≠ 人を退屈な気分にさせているのではないので、この使い方は誤り。)
